One is the series40 and the other one is the symbian or the series60. While the symbian offers fantastic multitasking capabilties there are some points for which the series40 wins somewhere over the symbian/s60. Some of the wins of s40 over s60 are mentioned below:

High end business s60/symbian devices will provide you enough processing capabilities but will cost a lot while the s40 phones are cheap and excellent as a part of entry level.
